Alternative fuel – Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
Emirates Gas (EMGAS), a subsidiary of ENOC; has continuously worked towards promoting the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative "green" and "clean" fuel for the transportation sector.
Natural gas for vehicles has proven its commercial viability and is considered one of the cleanest and safest fuel types with the lowest carbon emissions. Dubai's long term strategic plan to save and diversify its energy to provide 75 percent of the emirate's energy through clean sources by 2050 offers ample opportunity to drive the use of CNG.
Since natural gas is the cleanest burning fuel, there is a considerable reduction in the exhaust gas emissions when using CNG rather than petroleum based products, due to its lower carbon content. CNG produces 20-30% fewer greenhouse gas emissions and 95% fewer tailpipe emissions than petroleum products. Also, because CNG fuel systems are completely sealed, CNG vehicles produce no evaporative emissions. This will significantly contribute to reducing carbon emissions and promote sustainable development.
In 2014 ENOC - EMGAS introduced CNG Mother Station and Mobile Refueling Unit to cater small fleet customers. In the first quarter of 2016, EMGAS installed three CNG daughter stations in Dubai; Two in Al Qusais and One in Al Quoz.
EMGAS has also been supplying CNG in Dubai since 2007, by first collaborating with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to provide CNG for Dubai's water taxi services (Abra) during the pilot stage of the project.
